Not long ago, a client asked a question we hear more often than you might expect: “Can I take a pay cut and still retire on time—or even retire later doing something I actually enjoy?”
It’s a great question, and it gets right to the heart of what we believe financial planning is really about. Our Return on Life™ philosophy is built around helping people use their money to improve their lives—not the other way around. That means exploring creative options, challenging assumptions, and designing a path that supports both financial security and personal wellbeing.
One example stands out. Several years ago, a client came to us exhausted. The constant travel and management responsibilities were wearing him down, and he wanted to retire earlier than we had originally planned. The problem was that the changes required to make that early retirement work weren’t appealing to him.
So I asked a simple question: “Could you go parttime or contract with your current company and just work a little longer?”
He hadn’t considered it. But he approached his employer, and to his surprise, they were open to it. He transitioned into a contract role and continued working for several more years—without the stress, without the travel, and without derailing his longterm financial plan.
This solution won’t be right for everyone. But it’s a powerful example of what becomes possible when planning focuses on your life first and your money second.
At the end of the day, our goal is straightforward: to help you live the best life you can with the money you have. When your financial plan supports your values, your energy, and your vision for the future, the path forward becomes clearer—and often far more flexible than you might think.
